3 Q'S for BORDERLAND DIRECTOR ZEV BERMAN
You and producer Lauren Moews chose SXSW for the World Premiere of BORDERLAND, following in the path of her hit CABIN FEVER. What is it about SXSW and Austin that make it a favorite of filmmakers?
The festival has a great reputation for being really passionate about films and filmmakers. I'm excited to be a part of it. Not to mention the fact that Borderland is set on the Texas/Mexican border, and a lot of people from this area will still remember the event the film is based on. There couldn't be a better venue.
The world premiere of Goldcrest Films' Elvis and Anabelle by Will Greiger and stars Max Minghella, Blake Lively, Joe Mantegna, Keith Carradine and Mary Steernburgen.
What was the genesis of the script for BORDERLAND, which you co-wrote with Eric Poppen?
In 1989, a Texas college student went missing on the border. He had come down to South Padre Island and Matamoros, Mexico to celebrate spring break, along with thousands of other college kids. His disappearance prompted an extensive man hunt, and the investigation eventually turned up a drug cartel that had gotten involved in the occult. They had kidnapped this boy with the intention of using him in a ritual, and I'm not going to say another word about it. I was there in '89. I was a part of the chaos, as everyone was looking for him. It left an impression. I thought, "Wow that could have been me!" Years later, I brought some ideas to Eric Poppen. We developed the story together and had a really enjoyable collaboration writing the script.
BORDERLAND seems to meld true-crime with horror. What can audiences look forward to when they see this genre hybrid?
True crime and horror go hand in hand. Classic examples are Psycho and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Real life is usually a lot more terrifying than anything we can imagine. I have this Sartre quote taped over my desk, 'Hell is other people.' There's something about human based horror that cuts pretty deep. Borderland isn't your run of the mill scary movie. It explores the horror of fanatic belief! I can't wait for people to check it out.
