With Berekti Girmay

By: Samantha Skelton

Berekti Girmay’s debut book collection, "Maxi's Hobby. What's Yours?," "My Two Guardians," "The Lost Tooth," "My Nana's Cooking,” and "The Youngest Lamb," featuring five magical tales, celebrates the power of family bonds and childhood development.

Berekti shares the inspiration behind writing this book collection, fostering emotional connections between children and their loved ones. Her commitment to mental well-being and her belief in the magic of reading is truly inspiring.

In this interview, we learn how her own experiences shaped her desire to make a positive impact on children's lives and the power of storytelling through adolescents’ eyes.

My Two Guardians by Berekti Kinfe Girmay

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what it was like growing up for you?

My name is Berekti Girmay. I'm from Ethiopia, and I went to school there for a while. I did end up getting a scholarship and taking some exams, so then I got to come to the U.S.

I got my psychology degree with a minor in Gerontology, and then I started working in a childcare center for over five years and then transitioned to a mental health professional, which I am still currently doing.

How did you get interested in writing in the first place?

Although I'm currently in a mental health profession, for many years, I worked in childcare. I know how critical children's books are for their development. So, seeing all that and realizing the positive influence books can have on kids and parents, I decided to write something for them.

Is this something that you saw reflected in your own life?

Yes, as a childcare worker, I realized how reading to a child helps them learn about safety, a sense of security, emotional regulation, family support, and family traditions.

These are the things children learn from reading books. Having experienced this with children, I felt compelled to make a positive difference in their lives.

Is that something that you had for yourself growing up? Do you feel like you had that kind of support?

Yes, I was fortunate to be raised in a two-parent household, and my mom used to tell me stories. We didn't have everything, but my culture from Ethiopia was rich with storytelling, and I learned a lot from those tales.

However, I see that in today's fast-paced world, many parents are busy with multiple jobs, so books become even more crucial in providing children with valuable life lessons.

What is your debut book collection about?

My debut book collection consists of five books. The first book is titled, "Maxi's Hobby. What's Yours?" This book was inspired by an experience between a child and his uncle.

In "Maxi's Hobby. What's Yours?" we join Maxi, a young boy feeling bored and unfulfilled during a holiday gathering. As he yearns for an activity that truly captures his interests, Maxi's favorite uncle, Tommy, becomes his companion on an unforgettable adventure.

They explore various activities, from baking cookies with Aunt Yohan to birdwatching with Maxi's grandma. Through each experience, Maxi's curiosity is ignited, and he embarks on a journey of self-discovery to find his true passion.

The Lost Tooth by Berekti Kinfe Girmay

The second book is titled, "The Lost Tooth."

"The Lost Tooth" follows the delightful journey of Mila, a spirited little girl in search of her missing tooth. Filled with anticipation, Mila eagerly awaits a visit from the Tooth Fairy after placing her tooth under her pillow.

However, when morning comes and there's no gift, Mila experiences disappointment. But in a whimsical twist, her dreams become a doorway to the magical world of the Tooth Fairy.

Through this enchanting adventure, young readers will discover the power of dreams and the wonder of the Tooth Fairy's magic.

The third book is titled, "My Two Guardians."

"My Two Guardians" centers around a child who deeply appreciates the love and care provided by his two keepers, lovingly referred to as Mommy and Daddy. Despite Daddy's busy schedule, the bond between them grows stronger through shared activities.

When the Dad announces a move to a new house, the child grapples with mixed emotions, but Daddy reassures them with unwavering love and support.

This heartwarming story celebrates the commitment of parents to their child's well-being and highlights the enduring presence of their guiding lights.

The fourth book is titled, "My Nana's Cooking."

In "My Nana's Cooking," we meet Mika, who wakes up to Nana's inviting voice, calling her to the kitchen. Nana has been a pillar of love and care in Mika's and her family's life, taking on the role of a second mother.

One day, Mika discovers a change in the kitchen routine, prompting Nana to teach her how to make their favorite breakfast and share cherished family recipes.

As their bond deepens through this culinary journey, Mika expresses her gratitude and love for Nana, and Nana reciprocates the affection, emphasizing the reciprocal love within their family.

The Youngest Lamb by Berekti Kinfe Girmay

The fifth book is titled, "The Youngest Lamb."

Set in a beautiful coastal area, "The Youngest Lamb" book transports readers into a charming world where sheep lead peaceful lives on a farm. However, the youngest lamb's insatiable curiosity and longing for companionship lead her on an adventurous escapade into the bustling town nearby.

Along the way, she encounters unforeseen challenges and learns the importance of caution and the love and care provided by her family.

This captivating tale encourages young readers to appreciate the value of family and the importance of navigating the world with care.

What was the writing process for you like with that book?

The writing process was very resonant as I heard similar stories from kids in my previous childcare experiences.

Children often shared experiences with their uncles and other family members, and I found this theme to be highly relatable and helpful for kids in discovering their hobbies.

So, your debut book collection contains all five books. Can you tell me more about that?

Yes, I wanted to give as much as I can. Each of the five books has its own unique story, inspiration, and educational value for both children and parents.

What's the main thing that you would love a child, or the parent that’s reading to them, to take away from reading these books?

I want the children to take away love, care, security, and stability from reading my books. They can learn important life lessons and emotional support from the stories.

For parents, reading these books together can be a bonding experience that brings calmness and relaxation after a long day of work.

Do you have plans to continue writing? What else are you working on?

Yes, I'm currently working on more books. I already have the ideas, and I want to see how kids will respond to my current collection, which will help me create more relatable and empowering stories.

That sounds wonderful! I'm sure people will love your books. Where can they find your book collection and read more about you?

I believe in the tradition of spending more time reading. So, for the mental health and bonding of children and parents, I encourage everyone to embrace the habit of reading books together.

My book collection can be found on ArchwayPublishing.com, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and everywhere books are available.
